It’s that time of the year again. Time to begin planning and thinking about setting up the warm season turf grasses to enter dormancy and chemical controls for winter weeds. Today we applied fertilizer that will provide us with good color and moderate growth going into the fall. One of the main nutrients applied in this application was potassium. Potassium helps plants winterize their root systems and be able tolerate cold temperatures better, decreasing the chances of winter kill. Also in the application was a herbicide. This herbicide is used to prevent Poa annua and other winter weeds from emerging. There will be some winter weeds that still emerge from our history of overseeding, but chemical applications during the fall and winter will rid us of these rouge weeds.
