Cooler weather and shorter days are approaching, which means warm season grasses like Bermuda grass are slowing down growth. To assist in wear tolerance and winter injury, starting next week fairways, tees, and rough will be at winter heights, which is 1/4″ higher than where we have been. Raising heights now will allow the Bermuda to finish the little bit of growing it has left with more leaf blades and stored food in roots to withstand cart traffic and cold temperatures when dormant. Finishing the season at higher heights are a normal practice for warm season grasses that we began at Bluegrass last year and produced a great playing surface throughout the winter. We do anticipate some days on the path during the winter to limit the amount of cart traffic on the dormant turf, but higher heights will allow us out more on the course than not.
