Painting Fairways

Over the past couple years we have been exploring different ideas of making the Vamont Bermuda fairways more playable during the winter months. One down side to Vamont is it’s inability to retain the leaf blade just before green up causing a thin playing surface on the course. After several other methods of trying to alleviate this situation we are trying a new concept that has originate from bermuda greens managers. During winter months bermuda grass greens are painted with a green pigment for color, but through the process studies have found temperatures have been increased in the plant prolonging the growing period and in some regions of the world tricking the plant to not go dormant. The darkened color on the leaf blade absorbs more heat and through test trials have increased the plant’s temperature by almost 10 degrees. Our goal is to increase the fairways temperatures and hopefully the Vamont will hold their leaves longer into the winter season and reducing the thin condition into spring green up.  Just over the past 2 days we have actually seen some growth out of these 3 fairways.

Our test trials has been applied to fairways #14, #15, and #16. We will reapply the green paint about every 20-30 days until green up and evaluate the conditions to determine if in 2014 we apply this paint to all the fairways.

An Inside Look into the Leaf Season

The leaf season at Bluegrass is upon us. Over the last week the leaves have slowly begun to fall and the 30 mph winds that came with the storms last Thursday we reached the half way point of the leaf season in nearly a 2 day period. The leaf battle is a constant motion of blowing and mulching. The staff on a routine basis have a blower and 2 rotary mowers with mulching blades that progress through the course directing leaves into the fescue areas or out of play areas where mowers shred and disperse the leaves.

On many occasions the battle shows no signs of progress when leaves continually fall after being recently cleaned. Today, for example, greens were rolled and bunkers racked cleaned when 20 minutes later it appeared no worked had ever been done for more leaves had fallen on the green.

With another day estimated with 30 mph winds the battle will be long, but the staff will continue to use every resource possible to win the war.

Clubhouse Landscape Renovation – Phase 2

This week our staff began the second phase of the Master Landscape Plan for the clubhouse. Earlier this year Phase 1 was completed on the left side of the building and Phase 2 will include the right side of the building with the relocation of the bag drop area.

Phase 2 will include a very similar design as Phase 1. Most of the same plant materials will be utilized such as Nellie R. Stevens Hollies, Lime Light Hydrangea, Schipp Laurels, Carpet Roses, Winter Green Boxwoods and annuals. Currently all the existing plant material has been removed and the land has been shaped for plants. Included in the renovation will be a dry creek bed for the excessive water shed from the clubhouse roof and prevent the clubhouse from flooding anymore. All the existing drainage spouts from the roof have been tied together into an exit drain line to a near by catch basin.

Also in this renovation we will be relocating the bag drop area to a more friendly location that allows members or guests to drop their bags close to the Golf Shop versus walking around the building.

Recent storms this week will be postponing the progress until this area can dry and work can resume. The last remaining parts of the project include redesigning and installing a new irrigation system, plant/annual installation, bag drop station, and mulch.

Feel free to stop by the front door of the clubhouse to see a rendering of the expected results.

No Mow – Update

Last week the GCM staff began the first step in enhancing the no mow areas around the course. To begin, the chipping green area, #9 tee, and #5 tee no mow areas were sprayed with round up and tilled with soil amendments to provide good nutrition for the new seedlings.  These tilled areas have been seeded with fescue and will be planted again in the summer season with broom sedge. Other no mow areas around the course will be on hold until the fescue seeded areas become a success and achieve the desired look.  With a successful planting we will look to seeding all the other no mow areas in the fall of 2014. Optimum planting season is the fall and trying to establish seed in the spring with limited irrigation will be disappointing and introduce unwanted weeds that will produce difficult weeds to eliminate.

Existing no mow areas, not being converted yet, will continue to be maintained as bermuda grass although maintenance practices will differ from this year. The areas at #9 tee/#3 fairway will be reduced to be further away from play and #3 green/#4 green will be eliminated.  The bermuda no mows will be maintained on a more frequent basis and at a lower height. We will continue to adapt these no mows until the goal of having fescue no mows throughout the course is achieved.

Weekend Weather Delays

This weekend we are expecting a frost at least on Saturday.  Sunday’s weather looks to improve and have little to no delays on Sunday. Saturday’s expected frost delay release to begin playing golf could be between 9-10:30 am. This is merely a guess things could change. Hopefully this update will at least give you a better idea of how to plan your weekend.

Sad Neccessary Evil

Recently I had a Certified Arborist come out to the club to shed some light and give some suggestions on a few trees that have been going down hill for the past two years. There were 4 trees particularly that we were looking at between #12 and #13 and observed several more around the course. The 4 trees on #12/13, 2 Sycamores, 1 Tulip Popluar, and 1 Pin Oak, have drastically declined this year . The Popular was struck by lighting last summer and the oak and sycamores have been declining for two years. After careful consideration, the trees were never going to survive through the winter. It was tough to see these trees go since they do impact play, but this fall we will be installing some new trees in these areas according to the Master Tree Plan developed last year. The Master Tree Plan was developed for this specific reason. As the age of our mature trees come to a close, a new generation of trees need to be in place to protect the characteristic Bluegrass Treelines. Many of the trees on the course are relatively the same age and masses could be wiped out all at once. This program will continue adding new generation trees (with better stress tolerates) to the property as we have done over the past 2 years to keep Bluegrass, Bluegrass.
